Tax Revolts Abound: The People Fight Back October 18, 2005 11:24AM
On Taxes: Buffalo, New York
The people of Buffalo, New York are starting to get it. They have begun their fight against the big government machine and have formed the FreeBuffalo.org project designed to peacefully revolt against taxes in the city of Buffalo and in Eerie County, New York.

The revolt started on a cold March morning with 280 people and now has more than 800 members. This grassroots revolt was successful in stopping a 120 million dollar sales tax increase for Eerie county. The county countered with a 1/4 percent sales tax increase, but the efforts of FreeBuffalo resulted in the average county resident not incurring a 236 dollar per year increase on taxes.

FreeBuffalo is a Libertarian grassroots effort to affect change.

On Taxes: Palm Beach, Florida
A tax revolt seems almost inevitable in Palm Beach, Florida. For the past three years, the county commissioners have voted to spend revenue surplusses, and authorize larger budgets year over year rather than curb spending and return surplus tax dollars. On September 8, when the commission met to finalize the budget for fiscal year 2006 protestors demonstrated their protest against the big-government budget. When a proposal was made to keep the rate of budget growth equivilant tot he rate of inflation or population growth, the County Commissioners dismissed it out of hand.

The people of Palm Beach Florida are beginning to see the light, and are about to take matters back into their own hands and the county commissioners are daring them to do it. It's time to let the Palm Beach County Commissioners know who is boss.

On Taxes: Montville, Maine
Software glitches resulting in assessing errors along with the assessments themselves have caused the people of Montville, Maine to get angry over their property assessments. Some residents of Montville have seen their property taxes double over last year and they have demanded answers. The Montville government has also had problems paying their own bills and that also has the residents of Montville calling for accountability. Due to the anger, the town's tax town clerk and tax collector resigned her post effective October 14.

This is another great example of the people taking the government back and not standing still while elected officials with agendas take advantage of the office entrusted to them. The people of Montville, Maine deserve accolades.
